SOUTH OF THE BORDER - SC

On our way home from North Carolina, we decided to stop by the infamous South of the Border.  If you haven't heard of it, just drive on I-95 and you'll see advertisements for 100 miles in each direction. I remember stopping there as a child and it being kinda creepy and deserted. Once we decided to stop, I began looking up as much information about it as I could.

South of the Border opened in 1950 as a beer depot on the South Carolina/North Carolina border.  At the time, many of the neighboring counties were dry and this exit served as a "one last stop" to stock up before you crossed over. Over the years, it's obvious that the draw and excitement surrounding this highway gem has decreased over the years. Many of the stores and restaurants were closed and looked as though they had been for quite some time. This was kinda surprising to me, given the amount of roadside advertising announcing all of the amenities they provide.  South of the Border is WAY overhyped, but we had a good laugh and enjoyed our time there. Of course, I got carried away and took way too many photos. It was like a graveyard for lawn ornaments and carnival rides. I actually appreciated how run down and creepy it looked. It has an eccentric feel that really appeals to me.

As long as I can remember, every road trip down I-95 that included a trip through South Carolina into North Carolina included a drive past South of the Border. For that reason, I hope it remains open and in operation (to some capacity). Every time I drive by there is a sense of nostalgia and glimpse back into a different era. Cheers to you, South of the Border!

What places do you enjoy stopping at when you're one a road trip?
