A NEW RHYTHM - 2021
As we move from one season to the next, we've decided to once again revamp our family rhythm. Truth be told, our rhythm is an ongoing work in progress. As a family with two kids, our schedules are always in flux and so is what works for us at any given time. We're lucky that no two days ever seem the same.
As new seasons come around every year, it's only natural that things will shift. Our goal is to find ways for each member of our family to feel like they're part of something bigger.
A helpful process for reevaluating our rhythm is to start with the most important things - the non-negotiables. We figure what these things are by asking questions like:
How much sleep do I want to get each night?
What things do I want to get done before the boys wake up?
What time do I want to wake up each morning?
What things do I want to be true of me and my personality?
Answering these questions gives us a frame for scheduling our time for what's most important.
The next important thing is to establish a schedule. We've created an outline for what we want our days and weeks to look like, including the non-negotiables as well as other activities that are either necessary or desirable.
It's also important to build some flexibility into our schedule. If we overcrowd our schedule with too many things, we’ll either get burnt out quickly or fall behind and feel overwhelmed. It’s helpful for me to remember that every yes is a no and that every no is a yes. When it comes to reevaluating our family rhythm, this means that we're also spending time saying saying no to things that aren't most important for our family.
Of course, our weeks will not always go exactly the way we planned them. But, at the same time, things will never go the way we plan them if we don't actually plan them.
